Marion Davies established herself as one of the great stars of her era. A dancer with the Ziegfeld Follies, she was thrust into Hollywood's relentless machine purely on the whim of one man, William Randolph Hearst, the press magnate who spotted star potential in this 19-year-old girl. The push worked, and she landed the lead role in “Runaway Romany” in 1917. Hearst then offered her a whole series of lightweight films that the public embraced, charmed by this new ingénue face: “Cecilia and the Pink Roses,” “The Belle of New York,” “April Folly.” But the arrival of sound film in the 1920s plunged the silent-era actress into deep distress: struggling with a stutter, she gradually learned to master it and triumphed at the box office in light musical comedies such as “Marianne,” “Not So Dumb” and “The Bachelor Father.” She soon found herself starring opposite up-and-coming actors such as Clark Gable, Bing Crosby and Gary Cooper.
