Ticino (Italian: Ticino) is the only Swiss canton located entirely south of the Alpine arc. To the north it borders the canton of Valais via the Novena Pass, and Uri, from which it is separated by the Saint-Gotthard Pass (San Gottardo in Italian). It shares its northeastern border with Graubünden (Grigioni in Italian, Graubünden in German); to the south and west, it borders Lombardy and Piedmont. The Chiasso border crossing, at the canton's southern tip, lies only about 30 km from Italy's largest industrial center: Milan.

A canton with a southern climate, Ticino is known as "the Switzerland of palm trees". Its riviera, stretching along the shore of Lake Lugano, is overlooked to the north by Monte Brè, a panoramic viewpoint over Italian-speaking Switzerland.

The main towns of Ticino are Lugano, on the northern shore of the lake of the same name (also called Ceresio); Locarno, on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore (Italian: Lago Maggiore or Verbano); and Bellinzona, the cantonal capital.

The official language is Italian.
